I joined the Smith School in 2006 after a decade of working for technology companies ranging from Fortune 500 to early stage start-ups. I bring broad experience across corporate and product-line positions (more about that below). After 3 years with the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, I designed and launched the Center for Social Value Creation in 2009. I am responsible for the center's strategic direction across co-curricular programs, curricula, research and career. I am a lecturer in the Management & Organization department and faculty champion for the Social Innovation Fellows program. I am also the Assistant Dean for Global Initiatives at the Smith School.

Before coming to the Smith School, I worked in AT&T’s Corporate Development office on mergers and acquisitions. While at AT&T, I led investments for the company's corporate venture fund. During my tenure at AT&T, I also served as the product manager for the wireless platform as well as manager of strategy and business development for AT&T Consumer Services.

I began my career as a process consultant for Andersen Consulting (you know it as Accenture). During this time, I worked with U.S. and European clients on business process design and ERP system implementations. Subsequently, I served as a director at two startup technology companies focused on web-based business-to-business strategies (it was the late 90s afterall). Immediately prior to obtaining my MBA, I led strategic development of core processes for SAP's Global Solution Center.

I received a BS in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA with honors in finance and strategic management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. I live with my husband, three growing boys, and a flat-coated retriever in Potomac, Md. I talk about them all the time! I love running, hiking and just about anything outdoors. My philosophy as a teacher is to facilitate your learning process – its that simple! I am so excited to meet you.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I 301.405.9517 I mcarrier@rhsmith.umd.edu

Congratulations and welcome to Social Innovation Fellows! My name is Ashmi Sheth and I'll be your handy dandy TA during the course of this year. All of you should be pumped up to begin classes because Melissa is an excellent professor with a unique teaching style. She will build your confidence and help you understand your capabilities - it's amazing right?

Just a little about me - I have the heart and lifestyle of an entrepreneur, and have several roles on campus that I am equally passionate about. I am currently the President of the Indian Students Association, the President of Ashoka Terp Changemakers (you'll hear much more about this during class), and am active in the Undergraduate Consulting Society, Operations Management Society, and SUSA. I love being involved in extra-curriculars but am avidly passionate about my courses as well. Currently, I am seeking dual degrees in Finance and Government & Politics and have had some pretty awesome internships related to these majors. In my free time, I love meeting friends, old and new, biking out in the sun, and watching movies.

Entrepreneurship has always been interesting for me. It is a great challenge to walk into an unknown situation and build an entirely new space. The work you will be doing in SIF is meaningful and will impact your perspective of business. During your first semester, you learn several concepts which will then be applied second semester. The application process is crucial and has helped me land the internship I have today, as well as a refined understanding of business.

Get ready to develop a new and fresh network of people seeking to make impact. I am here as a mentor, guide, and friend throughout your courses. Please feel free to contact whenever you have a question/comment. I look forward to this upcoming year and spending time with all of you.
